Different Mediums

A comment on art
This is the time that we kick off another 1000 word day. Today will be day 7 of it all. The interesting thing is that yesterday’s session felt so fluid. Even as I just sat here and did an edit, it just seemed to flow. While I understand my own bias, and that I might think it sounds good. It could sound like total crap. I think that is where the confidence comes from. Doing something over and over again, knowing that you can live up to what you say.
That is probably true of a lot of things, and the first thought that pops into my head is about imposter syndrome. That arises from the disconnect of what people think of you, and who you are. They put this feeling on you. If they put it on you, that means you are doing it? So aren’t you “that” role, and maybe that feeling comes from you not believing in yourself? That I do not know, or more truthfully I have not thought on. This just off the cuff.
I am going to pivot completely.
I saw the odyssey yesterday with a friend, and I thought it was fantastic. I read the book earlier this year. It was the first time I tried be proactive with my reading. Knowing that this film was coming out this year. Wanting to compare it to the book. Not sure which translation I read, but like any book that gets made into a move. It did not follow it completely.
This Odyssey focuses more Odysseus being a PTSD war vet in a sense. Racked with guilt that he destroyed a civilization. Making it feel like he was never ready go home. Ashamed of what he had done, taking the alley of a self reflective war criminal. Which seems contraindicative, because those would never go together.
However, I think people are missing the point of art. I have seen some things on social media complaining that Helen of Troy was not the right character. Or that it didn’t follow the book, because the essential question is.
What happens when glory become hubris?
While these are all essential questions to ask yourself when you are reading a book. This is a different medium. Film is different from writing, and any person that has an art gets that. Some people who don’t have an art also inherently get that as well, not knocking those people.
But it is the people getting riled up who thing is should be 1 for 1. The truth is life isn’t 1 for 1, and it never will be. The great thing about art, is that it’s from the perspective of the artist. The book was read by Christopher Nolan, and he is just making his vision of it.
The same way a painter chooses canvas over cardstock. It seems easy to understand with a painter, but why is it so hard when art is digital?
Everyone seems to be a critic, without creating.
But I guess it is easier to judge, I know I am guilty of it. The same way Christians judge other Christians.
Or at least that is the way the bible says it.
People are so quick to judge thinking they know all. Thinking that they must have an opinion on everything. That is surely intensified by social media. The herd mentality to pile on. I would hate too if someone was above me, not seeing all the hard work that it took to get home. All the trials and tribulations that took place. The loss. In this case Odysseus loses his men, his dog, his time, and most importantly himself.
And while the main character is a man, I think the modern age is lost.
We are trapped in a silo of our own making. Hearing our own thoughts ring. Like the sirens speaking to you. Showing us what we most want, and what we most can’t have.
We all want what we can’t have, and we all think we know what we want.
Why then do we get what we most want, and feel like the same person?
Thinking that finally once I have achieved my goal, then I can be whole? Couldn’t we be that complete now?
Maybe I am asking a question of the ages. Speaking on human nature always wanting more. The forever moving goal post, but I guess people have been trying to answer that question forever.
